Liv 4 Success – Top tips for nailing your online application
Recently, Tempo have been working closely with Bulb and Monzo to help find them the perfect candidates for their roles. Both companies use an online application to choose who will join their team.
We know that applications can be stressful and time-consuming, we all know that. They ask a bunch of questions, some which are difficult and others which just seem pointless. We have been helping candidates through the different stages of the online application process – making sure we find the right fit for both the company and the candidate.
So, in this edition of Liv for Success, I want to offer you all some top tips on how you should go about completing an online application… making sure you have the best shot of landing your dream role.
Now let’s break it down…
The “Why?” questions
- “Why do you want to do this?” – stay clear of negatives – be positive and highlight how this would be a great opportunity to better apply your skills and develop your career… it’s always best to be cup half full, not half empty.
- “Why us?” – Don’t go on too much about how wonderful they are and what they can do for your career. Instead, emphasise what you can do for them. Research and find out all about them and the role. Highlight what you have in common with the company. Remember, you are trying to build a relationship.
Skills in action – competency
Follow the STARR method to answer competency questions. S – describe a situation T – tell them what your task or role was A – say what action you took R – always mention the result; employers like results driven employees R – sometimes it is appropriate to say that you reflected on what happened and decided how you would tackle the problem next time
Strengths and weaknesses
- Never give one word answers
- Think of your weaknesses as areas for development – don’t just say you are a perfectionist.
Questions to catch you out
E.g.“If you were stranded on a desert island what two things would you want to take?”
Show that you have the ability to be innovative and creative – and express your ideas in a clear written manner.
- Take your time to read the questions carefully – making sure that you answer everything they have asked.
- Write your first draft separately, checking it more than once before you submit – silly mistakes like spelling and grammar look sloppy.
- Keep your answers short and to the point – avoid waffling
- Include key buzz words that show you have the skills, knowledge and experience for the role you are applying for.
