5 Interview techniques to help you score your next role

Interviews can always be daunting; between prepping for the barrage of questions and choosing the perfect outfit, you need to be on your best form for that all-important day.

That’s why we’ve put together five bitesize tips to help you perform as best you can, and help you increase your chances of nabbing that role.

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

In the Age of Google, there’s just no excuse for not finding out the basics about the company interviewing you before you go in to meet them – even if it is for a temp role. With so much information readily available at our fingertips, you can easily check when the company was founded, who owns it, any company values or mission statements, as well as the team structure.

These facts not only prove that you’re invested in the company, but show that you went above and beyond the job spec by dedicating time to understand the place where you could be working.

 

2. PRACTISE AND PREPARE

There are plenty of sample interview questions all over the web, and you should read as many as you can. Depending on your interviewer, questions can be vague and sound like riddles, such as: “If you were a brand, which one would you be and why?” to classics like “Tell us about your weaknesses.”

If you feel particularly nervous or don’t have much interview experience, it’s always a good idea to get some of your friends involved so they can pretend to interview you.

Also, have some questions to ask them at the end of the interview. This shows that you are interested in the position rather than just the payslip.

 

3. LOOK AT YOUR WARDROBE

Sometimes the employer may not stipulate a dress code or uniform requirements, so it’s important to make sure you understand the work culture. As a rule of thumb, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and go smart for a great first impression.

Your mum was right; it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

4. GET SPECIFIC

Make sure you understand the role that you’re applying for, whether it is a PA role or in office management, and how you add value. Re-visit the job spec and think of specific examples in your experience that you can relate to the requirements listed. Organisational skills are popular and almost anyone can apply them to everyday life, for example.

5. BE CONFIDENT

Maintaining eye contact with an interviewer can be nerve-wracking, even more so if it’s a panel interview! The key is to remain confident, remember your skills and why you’re a great fit for this job. (Or simply channel your inner Sasha Fierce 😉 ) You’ve got this!
